Phrases, word endings & query syntax
Different endings: "στρατηγικ* διοικησ*" finds adjacent words beginning with those letters, such as στρατηγικῶν διοικήσεων. Keep “Match accents & breathings” off unless the accents must match exactly.
Words separated or reversed: στρατηγικ* NEAR/3 διοικησ* allows up to three intervening words in either order. BEFORE/3 keeps the written order.
Wildcards match spelling, not grammatical forms: they may include unrelated words and miss forms whose stem changes. To list known alternatives, use (λόγος OR λόγου OR λόγῳ).
Use AND, OR, NOT and parentheses; adjacent words imply AND. Quotes match a phrase. * matches any characters and ? one character. NEAR/5 allows up to five intervening words in either order; BEFORE/5 requires the written order. Operators are uppercase. Precedence: NOT, proximity, AND, OR. Include a positive term in every OR branch; leading wildcards need another positive term.
A single-term occurrence is one matching token; a phrase/proximity occurrence is a matching span. NEAR and BEFORE count every qualifying pair, so a dense passage can hold more matches than words. Boolean counts combine distinct positive spans within qualifying passages. For historical word frequencies, search one term or phrase. Rates use all word tokens in each work, including any Latin material.
